Defining Depression By Clinton R Johnson, Eternal Health Services
Truthfully, every living person has some experience with depression on a day-to-day basis, you just might not be aware of it or it is normalized. Much like when you are thirsty you are already dehydrated, by the time you feel truly or clinically depressed you have already been depressed for quite some time. Allow me to explain by first defining depression directly:
Depression is defined as layers of internalized emotion which are stored within the physical body.
Once these layers of emotion are internalized within your body, you will have physical symptoms that follow: your brain chemistry will change, your energy and motivation will deplete, your sex drive will likely lower, you may become suicidal, and so on. There is a massive amount of degree with depression, you may be completely functional and happy, but not quite as happy as you could be, or you could be so depressed your physical mind becomes shattered.
Here is the reason why depression manifests:
Emotions stack on top of each other because there is nowhere else to go, they stack and then they clump. Once they clump, that is considered depression, you will feel depressed by that point. This clump of emotion is typically an unrecognizable/unidentifiable feeling and therefore difficult to process and release. It’s also important to note that anger is the main emotion that acts as a glue, sticking these repressed emotions together and becoming a catalyst in forming these clumps within you.
Depression normally begins with trauma; traumas you know about and those that you don’t. When you have a very intense, hurtful, overwhelming, or shocking experience, it can be near impossible to process your emotions and the emotions you’re having will become internalized. In theory, these emotions may never leave you, they will stay with you infinitely until they are addressed and released. You cannot outrun or escape your emotions and trauma, and living with them compromises you, and your life, (not to mention the people around you) the only path to freedom is by understanding yourself and taking responsibility.
However, depression can happen gradually as well. Day after day of not honoring your true emotional needs, not doing things that make you happy, doing things that make you very unhappy, speaking negatively to yourself, having a poor attitude, and so on; all these things can gradually implant those subtle negative emotions and you’ll wake up one day shocked at the realization that you are depressed. Then, most people will attempt to distract themselves from the depression through stimulation (friends, TV, drugs, food etc.) so you tend to fall into negative habits and addictions can be formed.
Another note is to highlight what I said before, that any emotion not expressed is repressed, this includes “positive” emotions too! Many people withhold love, joy, humor, happiness because they feel they do not deserve it, have not earned it, or simply are not willing to feel good. These positive emotions also become internalized and cause you damage. So it is vitally important to know what you are feeling at all times and FEEL it so the emotion does not become trapped in your body. There is no trauma or depression from having a negative emotion, it is only holding onto a negative emotion that will create the internalization process and cause depression.
Now you see why I stated that every living person has some experience of depression, because we are all human and unless you are enlightened (these beings do exist but are unquestionably rare so I omit them from my generalization) you are going to miss certain emotions and they will weigh you down from being and feeling the best you can be.
