Hypnotherapy as a Therapeutic Modality

For the past 8 years of my life I have been a full-time clinical hypnotherapist; running my own hypnotherapy business has been one of the greatest sources of joy and excitement I have ever experienced. A lot of people are interested in hypnotherapy, and many people don’t know why they are, they are intuitively drawn to it. Hypnotherapy is still an “alternative” therapy but is arguably fairly mainstream as well. I would like to touch on explaining a little more about this modality for those who are interested, or perhaps I can open the mind of some who have never considered it before. I also want to point out that therapeutic hypnotherapy is MUCH different than stage hypnotism, as you shall see with my explanation.

How Does Hypnotherapy Work?

Firstly, in hypnotherapy we work with the subconscious mind, that is the greatest distinction and what sets it apart from every other form of therapy. Working with the subconscious mind is precisely what makes people fascinated and drawn to the modality. I listen to the client’s issues but we don’t chat about it at length like in traditional therapy, rather, I discuss concepts that will help them and we get into a meditation and put in the work that will create change for them.

There are different versions of hypnotherapy (mostly just for branding reasons, as there are as many variations in the practice as there are practitioners!) and a few different fundamental techniques we use, but the core of all of it is healing the subconscious mind. To be more specific, we heal the subconscious mind with words, we bring you into a dream-like state known as hypnosis (truly this is just a very deep state of meditation) using guided imagery/meditation techniques. When you enter into a deeply relaxed state, your brainwaves change and your subconscious mind becomes more suggestible, more agreeable, more malleable; the hypnotherapist can reprogram ANY belief system you have as long as your personal paradigm allows it. Yes, any belief can be reprogrammed, this is a powerful and significant statement.

Your Personal Paradigm

What I mean about your personal paradigm is we cannot reprogram your mind to do anything it doesn’t want to do or is not willing to do. We cannot take over your mind, all we can do is skillfully and masterfully use techniques and make suggestions which bring you into your own personal power and transform you on your own terms. When asked if I can control a person’s mind I respond with “I wish! If that were true then why bother with personal growth? I would command you to never have a negative thought ever again and be wondrously hard-working, successful, happy and loving!”, but alas you must climb the ladder to your evolution, working with the subconscious is simply the key to getting you up that ladder.

Altering Your Beliefs

As I said above, we can reprogram anything you are indeed ready for. Anything from giving up anxiety to waking up earlier in the morning, anything can be reprogrammed. Why is this so? Because your beliefs generate all the emotions you experience and all the behaviour habits/patterns that you have, so if you alter the belief then you’ll have different emotional responses and behaviour, it truly is beautiful and at times magical and unbelievable.

Hypnotherapy is an Advanced Meditation

If you remove the branding or labelling of hypnotherapy, it really is just an advanced form of meditation (at least that’s the way of looking at it that will bring the most success for the therapist and the client), and in my mind, meditation is the ultimate way to improve yourself, and in many instances is the only means of improving yourself. This is why I love my career so much and I am so passionate, because with hypnotherapy there is always a way to reach your goals, it just takes the right approach.

Healing with Regression Therapy

Another main way we work with the subconscious is something called “regression therapy”, there are different objectives and ways to do this type of work, but the way I mainly use this is to heal trauma. I have done more trauma healings than I can count, oftentimes it is trauma that has stayed with a person all of their life and they gave up hope on overcoming it. This is because you cannot heal in retrospect, trauma is a strongly stored emotion triggered by an event or circumstance; using a regression into your subconscious and exploring your emotions allows you to fully relive the trauma as it happened and then there are steps to releasing it completely and freeing yourself. Taking clients through trauma healing is one of the most exciting parts of my day and one of the best parts of my career, you never know what will come up but absolutely anything can be faced and released as long as the proper attitude is in place.

Your Relationship with Your Subconscious Mind

Your subconscious mind carries your emotional personality the same way your conscious mind carries your intellectual personality, I help clients develop an intimate working relationship with their subconscious. Many of your personal issues can be solved by sorting through it in conversation within your subconscious and getting it to shift its perspective on limiting ideas. This is a common technique we use in my practice, talk directly to the subconscious to create change! In my practice, I incorporate any metaphysical concept, idea, or technique that can aid and amplify the practice of hypnotherapy; that is my personal approach.

If you think of your subconscious mind like a supercomputer, in hypnotherapy we are uninstalling the programs you no longer wish to use, and we are installing the new programs that you desire; that is the simplest way to look at it. I’ve worked with over 1000 clients, everything from anxiety, depression, addictions, performance, spiritual development, past lives, you name it! The modality is extremely versatile and I encourage you to give it a try in whatever way feels exciting for you.

Even if you don’t see a therapist, I believe it is vital to learn about your subconscious mind and how to reprogram it, good luck!
